The Golden Pot. A Tale from Modern Times

The heroes of the tale by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann «The Golden Pot» are contemporaries of the writer, residents of the city of Dresden. Their daily lives are described in detail and realistically, but this world is whimsically intertwined with the world of poetry: the apple vendor turns out to be an evil sorceress, the secret archivist Lindhorst is the fire spirit Salamander from the magical land of Atlantis, and the golden-green little snake that appears to the main character in the elderberry bushes is Salamander's daughter. The airy and dynamic illustrations by the acclaimed Russian artist Nika Goltz transport the reader from the quite prosaic streets of Dresden to the office of the mysterious Lindhorst and to the wondrous Atlantis.
