Engineer-track worker Sergey Ivanovich Morozov, while walking on Christmas Eve before the New Year of 1912 with his wife Masha in the Crooked Lane in St. Petersburg, gets caught in a magical snow that, it turns out, falls here only... once every fifty years. Unbeknownst to themselves, the couple becomes the fulfillers of children's New Year's dreams - Father Frost and the Snow Maiden - for the next half-century. They are amazed by the new possibilities and for a long time consider all the wonders they create to be mere coincidences. However, the eyes of the heroes of the novel are opened by the pterkies and okhlis - representatives of a magical folk, who become their constant helpers in the pre-New Year days and nights.
