A little girl named Anabelle from a town that has only two colors: the color of snow and the color of chimneys blackened by soot discovers a small magical box filled with colorful yarn.
She knits a sweater for herself, and...
with the leftover yarn, she knits a sweater for her dog. Out of the scraps, she makes another one for the neighbor, more sweaters for all her classmates, for the teacher, for her mom, for a birdhouse, for cars, for houses... But the yarn never runs out, it just keeps going!
The town becomes so colorful, warm, and cozy that even the duke wishes to see it. But when he arrives, it turns out he also wants to buy the magical box of yarn. He offers Anabelle a lot of money, even more, but the girl refuses the deal. So, he steals the box. But upon returning home and settling into his favorite chair, the duke suddenly discovers that the box is completely empty! Getting what he deserves, the greedy duke throws it into the sea, and it drifts... back to Anabelle, who continues working on knitting a sweater for a tree.
Jon Klassen, who worked on the animated movies Kung Fu Panda (2011) and Coraline (2009), uses black ink, gouache, and a scanned texture of a rainbow-colored sweater, thereby creating stylish linear illustrations with bright geometric accents.
