The Belgian artist Gabrielle Vincent (1928—2000) gained worldwide fame through a series of picture books about the adventures of a kind-hearted bear named Ernest and his "adopted daughter," a little mouse named Celestine. Vincent's delicate watercolor illustrations are so expressive... that they almost do not require
words. With the help of light lines and barely noticeable strokes, she manages to convey the slightest shades of emotions—hurt, confusion, embarrassment, sudden delight, and of course, love in all its manifestations.
