The Nutcracker and the Mouse King

"The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by Hoffmann, published in 1816, turned a wooden toy from a Saxon town into the hero of one of the most beloved Christmas tales. The popularity of the story inspired composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and choreographer Lev Ivanov to create the 1892 production – criticized by the press but highly praised by Nicholas II.

On the eve of the holiday, Marie receives the Nutcracker. Everyone laughs at him, but the girl stands up for him. She does not yet know that he is an enchanted boy. Only the victory over the Mouse King and Marie's love will return him to his true form.
