The published work of the English aristocrat Reginald Scot aims to show the phenomenon of witchcraft, to expose self-proclaimed wizards and zealous witch hunters.
It is considered the first printed material dedicated to stage magic. Scot opposed the prosecution of those... accused of witchcraft, deeming it unreasonable and inconsistent with Christian principles, blaming the Roman Church for these persecutions. The preface was written by English demonologist Montague Summers.

«I assert that all those attempting to perform miracles through divination, witchcraft, or sorcery are liars, deceivers, and frauds.
Divination, witchcraft, predictions, and dreams – are mere vanity, and the law will be fulfilled without these deceitful tricks. God commanded the people not to pay attention to those who perform with the help of spirits, nor to diviners, for the honor they receive offends God.»
