Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) is one of the most famous fairy tale writers in the world. He was born into a poor family of a shoemaker and a laundress. Despite a difficult life, the boy was immersed in a fairy-tale...
world from an early age: his father often read him magical stories aloud, and his inclination for fantasies and daydreams helped him cope with life's hardships. At the age of 14, Andersen went to Copenhagen to, as he told his mother, "become famous".
The fantastic story "A Walking Journey from the Holmen Canal to the Eastern Tip of Amager," published in 1829, was well received by the reading public and brought the writer fame. In 1833, Andersen received a royal grant and went traveling. In a year and a half, he visited Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. The journey greatly inspired the writer, and in 1835, he published his first collection of fairy tales. The book immediately became popular and was a great success. In total, Andersen wrote over 160 fairy tales.
"The Snow Queen" is one of the most famous tales by the writer, enjoyed by both children and adults around the world. Many animated and live-action films have been made based on it, a ballet of the same name has been staged, and the opera "The Story of Kai and Gerda" has been written. "The Snow Queen" is a story of love and loss, long searches, and struggles. The desperate attempts of a girl, who wanders barefoot through the world alone to find and return her foster brother home, leave no one indifferent—neither the characters in the book (who are assisted by a river and flowers, doves and crows, a bandit and a prince with a princess, a deer and inhabitants of distant northern lands, and by the end even angels), nor the readers—both young and adults. This story about the devotion of the human heart and the compassion of the world promises each of us: no matter what winds blow over the earth, no matter what separations and losses stand in our way—all will ultimately be well and right, such is the arrangement of the world!
