How not to miss winter holidays and spend time wisely? Without a doubt, American writer Mary Mapes Dodge knows the answer. For many years, her novella "Silver Skates" has been read by adults and children all over the world. The main characters of this story are a brother and sister living in Holland, Hans and Gretel, who love skating more than anything else in the world. But, alas, their family is poor and cannot afford such luxury. The dream of skates seems unreachable, when suddenly it turns out that their hometown, Broek, will host a competition for young speed skaters with silver skates as the grand prize.
Friends Jack and Jill, the heroes of the eponymous novella by the renowned Louisa May Alcott, also know very well how to spend winter holidays properly. But Jack could never have imagined that sledding down a hill could end in great trouble, and he would need a lot of courage to cope with the challenge.
Two wonderful winter stories are illustrated by American artists of the late 19th century, Allen Doggett and Harriet Roosevelt Richards.
