It is only known that he lived in France and was a simple hairdresser. However, he had excellent intuition and, coming under the influence of the teacher Kur de Jebelein in a Masonic lodge, began to seriously engage in occultism, leaving the hairdressing profession and changing his surname from Aliette to an esoteric pseudonym represented by the same surname written backwards. However, upon beginning to study the Tarot cards through his teacher's interpretations, he quickly realized that the intricate interpretations and philosophical complexities accepted among Kabbalists alarmed and repelled even the true devotees of this Knowledge. Masonic Tarot was incredibly complex, and understanding this, Etteilla began to develop his own system, which he refined throughout his life – for 30 years. He tested many spreads and card variations on it. His system took its final form only by the year 1780.
