The change occurs by rotating the revolving head. To illuminate the specimen, one can use the built-in mirror or LED illumination. The latter requires AA batteries (not included). The light source is located under the stage, so only transparent objects can be studied with the microscope.  The microscope body is made of plastic. It is lightweight yet durable. The child will be able to take the microscope with them on trips or to visit. The stage is equipped with convenient clips that securely hold the microscope slide under the lens.
