The Carpets of King Quadratust. A Puzzle for Children Aged 5–8
King Quadratust lives in a palace with many rooms, both square and rectangular. The king's feet have started to freeze, and he commanded his servants to cover the entire floor with carpets. The king's carpets are rectangular and square. They...
were laid in a single layer so that they do not overlap and there are no empty spaces between them. When the servants washed the floor, they took away all the carpets and wrote on the floor under each carpet how many cells were in the carpet they removed. Now the floor needs to be covered with carpets again. The number 4 must be covered by one carpet of 4 cells, the number 6 – by one carpet of 6 cells, and so on. In the room, there can be several carpets of the same size but different shapes: we do not know whether the carpets were narrow or wide. The solution to each puzzle is easier to find when you have colored carpets in your hands, all of which fit the sizes of our rooms. The tab has carpets of different sizes. The 1st floor is the first level of difficulty.
We recommend solving the tasks in order, from simple to complex. At the end of the notebook, we provide only one solution option, but there may be several. If you find it difficult to solve a task, you can look at the answer for the position of one of the large carpets and try to arrange the others on your own.
