The First New Year's Tree. An Indian Tale

This New Year's story has reached us from the east of the Canadian peninsula of Labrador, and it originated with the indigenous Innu people living there. The supreme deity of the Indians, the Great Manitou, seeing how hard life was... for the Innu, especially in winter, decided to brighten their lives and gift them a New Year's tree. The Great Manitou went through the whole forest, appealing to different trees, but they all refused his request. All except for one, a humble fir tree, which has since adorned the Innu's home for the New Year.
