The thirst for adventure drove Farley Mowat, the author and protagonist of this book, throughout his life to the boldest, if not mad, endeavors. For instance, to purchase a dilapidated schooner in a fishing village on Newfoundland, somehow repair it, and set sail in the surrounding waters. The schooner was named "Happy Recklessness" because only a lucky star and the crew's audacity could explain the success of the whole venture. The schooner leaks, runs aground, becomes frozen in ice, does not respond to the helm, its engine breaks down more often than it works, and it generally threatens to explode, but "Happy Recklessness" and its crew inevitably overcome all trials.
