The ranks of spiritualists today number millions of adherents. Persons who call themselves mediums demonstrate phenomena of a special kind, whether physical or mental, and draw public attention to them as evidence of the afterlife and the possibility of spiritual communication between us and the heavenly world.
The emergence and spread of the theosophical cult in America and Europe are of historical interest. Theosophy claims a deeper metaphysics than Spiritualism, and has thousands of adherents, so it is of great interest to study its roots, its founder and its present authorities.
“Spiritism is included in this list and declares the immortality of the soul to be a demonstrable fact. He challenges skepticism by saying, “Come and I will show you that there is an afterlife. Death is not a wall, but a door through which we pass into eternal life.” Theosophy also has its occult phenomena, which prove the indestructibility of soul power. Spiritualism and Theosophy contain the seeds of truth, but they are both imbued with superstition. I intend to separate the wheat from the chaff if possible. In examining the phenomena of Spiritualism and Theosophy I will use both the scientific and the philosophical method, in the hope that each will correct the other."
