Pour the contents of the packet in a mound into an aluminum dish. Place it on a non-flammable surface, such as something ceramic or on a tile.
Create a depression on top, turning the mound into a small volcano.
Attention: working with fire! Help the child light the resulting volcano with a match and do not leave it unattended during the experiment.
Observe how the self-sustaining exothermic decomposition reaction spectacularly transforms orange ammonium dichromate into green ash.
Result. An oxidation-reduction reaction in which the chromium atom entering into the dichromate anion of the salt takes electrons from the nitrogen atoms contained in the ammonium cation.
