The drama by Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814-1841) «Masquerade» is a true literary monument - to the author and the fading era of Romanticism. It contains all the attributes of this literary movement: dissatisfaction and accusations towards the universe, condemnation of vices and notorious scoundrels around, boiling passions, illnesses, fainting, threats, rivalry, cards, duels, revenge, betrayals. The author likens life to a masquerade or a card game, with inevitable cheating. But is this the truth or merely striking paradoxes to which the poet has always been drawn?
