Pavel Petrovich Bazhov (1879-1950) is rightly considered a classic of 20th century Russian literature. The basis of his famous Ural tales consists of literary adaptations of the working folklore — stories told by miners and stone-cutting masters. They tell of kindness and justice, honesty and love, the joy of creative work, and the search for beauty and perfection. The main characters of the tales are brave, courageous people, true masters of their craft.
Since the first publication of the tales, much time has passed, but the thoughts embedded by the author in the works, the stories of people, and the amazing word-pictures have not become outdated. They, like precious stones of the Ural mountains, create a complex pattern that adorns our speech, enriches it, and makes our understanding of the Motherland, the people, and ourselves clearer and brighter.
