The Red Flower. Tales and Stories

All the stories and novellas of Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin (1855-1888) are infused with a tragic essence. Like the hero of his parable novella "The Red Flower," he took upon himself all the responsibility for the evil in the world and wanted to overcome it. Hence his writing style - maximally intense, subjective, exposing the most profound strings of the storyteller's soul, speaking in the first person, as if directly addressing the heart and feelings of the reader - in other words, appealing to another sensitive, suffering soul.
Infinity, immortality, beauty - and here, too, death, murder, blood, and dirt: why? why? - these are the questions raised by Garshin and desperately thrown in the face of indifferent people. Through his work, he signals the world about the impending catastrophe, and the only way for him to save the world is through self-sacrifice, to give his life "for his friends."
