The Devourer Seeks the White Owl

Anipa lives with her parents and younger brother in the middle of the tundra, in the Nunavak encampment. They are preparing for winter and making supplies, so that later, sitting in the earth lodging with lit fat lamps, they can... sing songs and tell cheerful stories, but they are disturbed by the devourers. These terrifying creatures suck the soul out of a person and leave their empty shell behind. The devourers have settled beyond the Black Mountain and now threaten Nunavak. Because of them, the residents of the encampment only caught two walruses in the summer – too few to survive the cold. Anipa worries about her family, and she still needs to deal with her own troubles, as her father is giving her away in marriage to a reclusive stranger.
