It is based on a folk tale recorded by Pushkin in Mikhailovskoye from Arina Rodionovna. It was not published during the poet's lifetime. At first glance, unlike other fairy tales by Pushkin, the plot is simple: the stingy and foolish priest, upon meeting his worker Balda, receives retribution for his greed.
