Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was a British writer, author of the only work that brought her worldwide fame. It is a poignant story about the life of a horse, told from its perspective. In her youth, Anna Sewell injured her leg...
and often traveled in horse-drawn carriages. Thus, her interest in horses was born. In her book, she wanted to draw people's attention to the suffering that humans sometimes inflict on horses, to show that they are living beings, not just a means of transportation. Her contemporaries were touched by this story and began to read the book to their children to teach them kindness towards all living things. Over time, this book became regarded as a classic of children's literature.
The novel is published in a pre-revolutionary translation, signed with the initials E. B.; the watercolor illustrations were done by the wonderful contemporary artist Pyotr Lyubayev.
A black horse named Black Beauty was born on a farm owned by a kind man. The foal frolicked in the meadow, listened to his mother's guidance, and knew no worries. When he grew up, he was sold to a landowner, and Black Beauty became a carriage horse. The new owner loved him for his gentle nature and intelligence, and the horse had many opportunities to prove his loyalty. But the landowner had to sell his horses, and a series of trials began for Black Beauty. He changed many owners, learned hard work and deprivation, but in the end, fate smiled upon him, and he ended up with good people.
