Jane Ellen Harrison was one of the first women to study ancient literature at Cambridge University, earning the respect of the scholarly community worldwide for her works on Greek religion. In a time when the study of texts was often... seen as the only means of understanding ancient religions, Jane Harrison was able to broaden the horizons of research by using materials and ideas drawn from archaeology, art history, and comparative anthropology. We present to you Jane Harrison's book Art and Ritual of Antiquity, dedicated to anthropological searches for the origins of religion and mythology in Greece. The main message of this book is that ritual and art share a common root in the emotional relationship to life, and moreover, that primitive art, under normal conditions, develops, at least in the case of drama, directly from ritual.
