O. Henry dreamed of travel since childhood and at the age of ten ran away from home with the intention of dedicating himself to whaling, but he was brought back, and he had to earn his bread through odd jobs. It was only toward the end of his life that he realized his calling was literature, as evidenced by his brilliant stories, extraordinarily expressive, witty, and sarcastic. They embodied all his inexhaustible love for adventures and distant wanderings.
