The novel by Yuri Nikolaevich Tynianov (1894–1943) tells the fate of the Russian poet, a lyceum friend of Pushkin, a participant in the Decembrist uprising of December 14, 1825, Wilhelm Küchelbeker (1797–1846). He did not become a great poet and...
was not among the most famous Decembrists, but his life path is an example and lesson for us all. We see that honor and conscience are not empty words, and human dignity and faith in ideals can be preserved even in the most difficult circumstances.
The novel is very modern in form: most of the images are visual, the text is divided into short paragraph-scenes; there is active work with plans: close-ups, medium shots, long shots; the narration quickly moves from one episode to another, as if in editing.
Tynianov carefully reconstructed events from historical documents and the poet's own archives, reliving each moment of his life anew. And, according to Veniamin Kaverin, Kühlya «came alive before us in all the truth of feelings, with all the touching purity of his hopes and aspirations».
