The plot of the novel is simple — the meeting of Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth in youth, love, a breakup, and a new meeting years later, already as mature, experienced, and self-aware individuals. However, at the same time, "Persuasion" represents a stunningly humorous and subtly ironic "encyclopedia of manners" of the provincial English "society" of the early 19th century. Young ladies chasing wealthy suitors, fortune hunters, mothers and aunts desperately intriguing in search of advantageous matches for girls, shallow and affected local "lionesses," impoverished gentry, gossip and rumors — colorful portraits and sharp, amusing situations literally come to life before the reader.
