During the reign of Emperor Yao, the population of ancient China constantly suffered from flooding along the Yellow River. Determined to put an end to the devastation, Yao tasked Gun, one of the officials, with developing a plan. After nine years of unsuccessful attempts with dams and levees, his service came to an end. After Gun's death, his son Yu inherited the work. Analyzing Gun's mistakes, Yu decided to build a system of canals to divert the overflowing river to the surrounding fields and streams.

Legacy of Yu is a solo (and only solo) game with a nonlinear campaign and the possibility of a complete restart, where you take on the role of the legendary hero of the Xia Dynasty, the Great Yu. Your task is to build canals ahead of the impending floods while simultaneously protecting your growing village from the onslaught of neighboring barbarian tribes. With each game, stories unfold and new gameplay elements are added. The campaign features a balance system that adapts the game's difficulty depending on how well you are doing. The campaign concludes as soon as the player wins or loses 7 games.
