Young widow Nora O'Mealy returns to her native Chicago to reconcile with her seriously ill father and introduce him to her two-year-old son. Wanting to thank the anonymous donor who sent a generous treat to the hospital, Nora calls the restaurant from which the food was delivered and confirms that the benefactor is Reid Chamberlain, a millionaire, owner of a hotel chain, and her childhood friend. In the midst of their first date, Reid learns that Nora has a son.
This revelation disheartens the millionaire, and he decides to end the relationship with the woman he had dreamed of meeting for fifteen years.
