The novel reflects a complex period of national history associated with the formation of the Murmansk railway and the establishment of the Northern Arctic Ocean fleet, which later gave rise to the heroic Northern fleet. The Russian cruiser "Askold" began its service in the Dardanelles operation and entered the revolution as a ship of the Northern fleet. A large part of the novel is devoted to the struggle against foreign intervention in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, and Karelia.
