In the New York slums lives an unusual girl with a boyish name, Tommy. However, her boyishness is not only in her name but also in her clothes and behavior – this makes it easier for her to survive and earn a living in the city's poorest neighborhood.
Meeting a sea captain changes Tommy's life, allowing her not only to find her true girl’s name but also to gain a family.
