The book consists of novels, stories, and essays by Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin (1870-1938), created after the October Revolution. Kuprin felt emigration as a personal tragedy and often returned in his work to Russian history ("The One-Armed Commandant", 1923), to vivid... impressions of his youth ("Crimson Blood", 1926). His love for pre-revolutionary Moscow highlights the Parisian essays of the writer, separated from his homeland. The novel "Janet" (1933) tells the story of the bitter fate of a destitute Parisian émigré: endlessly lonely, he becomes attached to a little homeless girl he meets on the street, but this joy also proves to be short-lived for him.
