In 1916, Franz Marc, one of the main artists of German Expressionism, dies on the battlefields of World War I. Three years prior, he paints the work "The Fate of Animals," which oddly predicts both his own death and the... global fire that would soon engulf Europe. Gazing intently at Marc's canvas, American philosopher and art critic Morgan Mace discovers hidden connections between notions of the Apocalypse and the spiritual essence of painting, between the tragedy of war and the experience of religious revelation.
