Assembly model - Flagship ship of Christopher Columbus "Santa Maria".
Historical reference: On August 3, 1492, the first expedition under the command of Christopher Columbus departed from the port of the city of Palos in search of new routes to India.
It consisted of three ships: "Santa Maria", "Pinta", and "Ninña". "Santa Maria" - the flagship ship of the great explorer is probably the most famous sailing vessel of the Age of Great Discoveries. The ship's armament included cannons (four 20-pounders, six 12-pounders, eight 6-pounders), several swivels and mortars, and about a hundred heavy muskets. No accurate drawings of the vessel have survived, and one can only speak of the approximate dimensions of the ship: length - 23m, width - 6.7m, draft - 2.8m, displacement - 237t.
"Santa Maria" is often referred to as a caravel, although the ship's rigging consists of a square mainsail, square foresail, and trapezoidal topsails beneath them, a lateen sail on the mizzen, and a staysail on the bowsprit, and it would be more accurate to call it a carrack.
