If a child aged 6-12 months enjoys listening to (or looking at) a book you bought, it does not mean that he likes it or understands anything from what he has read. He enjoys the interaction with you, your voice,... and your attention. He will be quite satisfied with a textbook on higher mathematics (or a weekly crime report), if you read it expressively.
Our books, however, the child will "read" himself because he will understand their content and will happily repeat the "voices" of the animals.
